Renovations, Redecorating, etc.

Between landscaping and fixing interior issues, my plate is full.

I finally got a landscaper to call me back and come out to give me an estimate.  Apparently, my English Ivy has Kudzu.  I don’t want to kill my Ivy, but I do want to kill the dreaded Kudzu.  We’re going to try to accomplish this.  He’s also going to clear out the front planter box for me, put in some more Manhattan Euonymus and leave me room to plant a few rose bushes.  The mystery shrub in our other planter box that had been cut down prior to our home ownership is actually a hackberry tree that was cut down and is now branching out again.  Ugh.  My rosemary has to go.  It’s far too big and rustic for the feel that I’m going for.  That’s going to make me sad as it’s a key ingredient in much of our cooking.  I’ll plant some more in the backyard.

We renovated the guest bathroom.  Here are the pictures.  It was fantastic and all done for less than $1000.

This is the BEFORE picture.

See the rest of the pictures here (including the wood floors!).

I just finished doing the laundry room.  Well, it needs accessorizing, but it’s mostly done.  Will get pictures soon.  The walls were buttery yellow, but I loved that bathroom blue so much (Sherwin Williams matched Benjamin Moore’s Buxton Blue), that I painted it in the laundry room, too.  Looks great with my dark blue LG Steam washer and dryer.  Again, as soon as I’m done accessorizing, I’ll get pictures.  I need a washable rug, some new window treatments, and I need to build a pretty white table top for the top of my washer and dryer (not a fan of the rubber topped one they sell just for that purpose).

Right now, my new project is the boys room.  Whoever painted this place before us had the ceilings painted the same color as the walls.  The ceilings are damaged asbestos popcorn, which wouldn’t be such an issue, except that they’re painted (which makes the wet removal an issue).  I’ve researched removal and since we have two six year olds running around and getting into everything AND we’re only going to be here for four years, it’s not worth the risk and pain to do it myself OR the risk and expense to have it done for me.  Thank God for the guy at Sherwin Williams (who happens to be removing HIS asbestos ceiling right now).  He directed me to a good, 1.25 inch nap roller (I’d been using a .75 inch foam roller which SUCKED more paint off than it left on) and a good flat white paint.  I did the boys ceiling yesterday and it looks absolutely 110% better with only one coat over that beige crap.  Don’t get me wrong - I love the beige on the walls, it’s actually very pretty (Wise Owl from Kelly Moore), but it’s far too much to have it on all the ceilings, too.  The good roller helped texturize the flatter bits and blend it all in.  The walls are Sherwin Williams Smoky Blue, which is turning out to be more of a navy blue.  I’m trying to decide whether it’s too dark or not.  The lighting in there is horrible, so I’m thinking that some extra lighting is in order (buying lamps scares me - I’ve made some horrible mistakes before…).

Okay, time to get off my butt.

Garden Update

I love local nurseries.  I just have to say that.  The one that I go to, well, the owners are absolutely wonderful.  Full of information and go out of their way to find things for you, carry your items, and load up your truck.  And, they’re Palin loving republicans, just like me.  LOL  I guess that always helps…

Anyway, I just picked up some more Texas Tee (organic fertilizer that rocks my socks off - I put it in EVERYTHING, even potted plants), Olive’s Oil (the owners special “brew” for soil conditioning and aerating - also rocks my socks off), diatomaceous earth for the ants in the front yard as well as the termites I found in a tree root not far from our house, 3000 ladybugs for the boys to let loose (see! Sometimes mom’s are cool!), Sluggo for our snails (while beautiful - I love their shells! - they’re everywhere and I just want to get them under control a bit), and Spinosad which is also for the ants.  They’re going to call me just as soon as they receive their beneficial nematodes which will hopefully help with the ants as well (clearly, I’m pulling out all stops.  Well, short of going severely toxic.).

As far as my to do list goes, I’ve scalped the lawns, front and back (I’m reseeding the bermuda, anyway, and yes, I love my bermuda grass), fertilized in the smallest amount of time EVER (10 minutes total, and that includes figuring out how to use it!) thanks to my new broadcast spreader with Texas Tee and worm castings, I’ve pruned and fertilized the hedge in front, have attempted to cultivate the soil for the roses and decided to purchase or rent an 8 inch auger.  I’ve realized that I’m not going to be able to man an 8 inch auger in this soil all by my lonesome and settled for a Black and Decker “Garden Cultivator” due to positive reviews online.  This evening, when it cools down, I’ll water in the lawn fertilizer with some Olive’s Oil and let the boys release the ladybugs.  If the wind dies down a bit, I’ll have at the front yard with the diatomaceous earth.  Tomorrow, I’ll break out the Spinosad for the ants.

I tried digging one of the wimpy boxwoods up in the other front planter box, but my shovel wouldn’t go into the soil.  At all.  I managed to scrape away some of the dried leaves and debris, but there was no digging in that soil.  I’ll be treating that with Olive’s Oil, as well.  I think the problem is less the soil than it is the ivy roots, however, and that bums me out.  Oh, and I left my number for a landscaper to call me about digging that little wannabe hedge out (the one in front of the ivy, not the other, bigger, more beautiful one…) as well as trimming the ivy for me.  I really need it to be thinned out.  GB wants it gone yesterday, but I’m having a hard time losing it.  I know it’s invasive and considered a huge pest and will probably ruin our mortar, but really…it’s gorgeous.

What else…?  I planted some colmbine and more salvia.  I repotted the lemon and lime trees into bigger pots and pruned them a bit.  I also set up our new automatic sprinkler system.  It’s unfortunately NOT in-ground, but at least I’ll be able to set it and leave it while I tend to other things.  I want to set up a soaker hose to it for the rose bushes and new crepe myrtle, too.  We’ll see if that happens.  I have no idea how long to leave a soaker hose on…

I’m off to pick up the boys!  The Prawn just started at The Crawfish’s school today.  He was stoked.  As was I when I saw how SMALL his class was!!  Less than a dozen kids to two teachers.  THAT is phenomenal - thank God for private school.

Lord Help Me, What Have I Done?!

I just ordered 16 rose bushes and one climber.  That means I have loads of work ahead of me.  The soil here in West Texas is…well…compact, dry clay - not soil.  I planted a small crepe myrtle (Muskogee - lavender flowers) today in a bed I’d already worked last summer and getting past four inches is damn near impossible.  I have a “Claw” that helps immensely, but despite that, it’s still tough.  I’m just complaining because I have to learn a whole new gardening environment (SE Alaska has gorgeous, rich soil).  Anyway, these roses are going around the perimeter of the backyard and three in the front of the house.  I just planted some Salvia along the back of the house in hopes of attracting some of the swarms of butterflies that are around here.  It’s really pretty - I hope it fills in properly.

More plans for the backyard include:
Seed the backyard with bermuda to match the front
Fertilize with Texas T (kick ass organic fertilizer, if I do say so myself!)
 Worm poo everywhere
 Compost everywhere
Figure out what to do with the horrific excuse for a patio in the back (possibly lay more concrete on top and build a pergola)

Plans for the front yard:
Rip everything out of the front planter box
Plant three rose bushes (one on each end of the house with one in the middle)
Plant more bushes in between the two rose bushes on the right
 Reseed the lawn
Fertilize with TT, Olive’s Oil, and worm poo

I should pick up a timer for the hoses.

28 Years Old - This Year’s Goals

Two years ago, my goal was to get happy with myself, heal my mind, and find a life partner.  Last year was the year of the house.  We bought our own beautiful home and I spent the better part of last year learning how to be a homemaker.  Sounds easy?  Not for someone who was working her dream job just prior to that.  I finally feel like I have everything flowing well.  This year is going to be the year of Stephanie (my parents are probably groaning, as I was an only child and this sounds like a continuation of their journey as parents LOL).  I’m working on the two things that have bothered me for most of my life.  My body and my style.  Oddly enough, as opposed as I am to breathing and all things healthy…I’m actually enjoying my journey so far this year.  The weight loss is slow, but for the first time, my focus isn’t really on that.  It’s on my energy level.  I’ve been looking forward to jumping onto the treadmill lately and have actually bumped my usual, snails’ pace of five miles per hour up to seven.  I may try eight today - it feels really good to stretch my long legs out while running.  I still can’t go very far (two miles if I’m NOT watching the screen on the treadmill and peppering it with 3 mph breath catches), but I will.  My goal is to run a mile without having to catch my breath.  Then to run two, and then to three.  I really want to run a 5k with decent time.  Running a 5k at all would be a huge accomplishment for me, but what I really want is to run one with good time.  After that, I’d like to work up to 25 miles a week and then start working on speed some more.

I’m also trying to get better about stretching.  I hate stretching.  Loath it.  Mainly because my hamstrings are so stinkin’ tight that I can barely move to stretch them before they’re tugging painfully.  I really should look into a beginner yoga class or pilates…  Should, but probably won’t.  It’s not a huge priority.  I need to be doing some basic stretching here at home.  There’s the yoga on the Wii Fit, but I like to have GB around when I do it to critique my form.  I sound full of excuses on this one…

With regards to style, I think that will fall into place once I’m somewhere in between a size 12 and a size 8.  I wonder where I’ll feel my best…

Anyway, it feels good to be on my way.  I’ve lost almost 15 pounds so far this year.  My next milestone will be fitting into my size 14 jeans again (these 16’s have got to go!!!).  I’ve also been taking an acai berry supplement which has made a HUGE difference.  I need to place an order with my vitamin company to get some pure acai berry capsules, though.  I’ll be out soon and there aren’t a lot of options around town.  Anyway, good stuff.

Financial Freedom & Happy Home!

Some big milestones have occurred so far in this short year.  I’ve paid off a $1300 educational debt.  It hadn’t been a priority for various reasons, mostly emotional, which wasn’t fair to the organization, and as I “got over” my issues with it, I just wanted the debt gone.  I underestimated the feeling of paying that debt off.  I’ve felt great ever since dropping that check in the mail and have found it motivating financially.  That was last month.  This month, I just paid off a $1700 credit card balance (previously $5000) of my mothers that she loaned me to buy a computer with a few years ago (yes, you read that right - $5000 computer).

I have the investing bug again.  I’m looking for a few small but good, stable investments to make.  I have a few ideas and once the rest of my debt is paid off, that will be my treat to myself - an investment account.  I’m watching the news right now and they’re covering 401k’s again.  And again…I am reminded that my gut instinct is usually right on.  I am an investment novice, but 401k’s have always sounded like a really bad idea to me and now, I’m really happy that I didn’t go through with it when it was offered as an option years ago.  I’m sure that everything will work out for those who do have them, but the question is…when?

Taxes were good to us this year and we may have a new kitchen soon because of it.  If we can take care of the kitchen, that will only leave very minor issues to deal with in the house (such as replacing the ceilings and refinishing the floors).  We could use the money to pay down debt, but because we USE the kitchen so very much, and we both love being in the kitchen, it’s worth it to us to get that taken care of sooner than later.

Speaking of home stuffs, the boy’s now have a bedroom slash playroom that will soon look like something from the pages of Pottery Barn Kids - for a fraction of the price!  We installed four full width Ikea Billy shelves, two full height, two half height in between them, leaving room for their projector screen.  I need to add some trim to them and find some more colorful things to make it feel brighter and warmer in their room, but between that and their new HUGE dresser (more clothing storage than they have clothes - yeah!), their room is pretty darn cool.  We purchased those nifty Ikea Kura reversible loft beds with the star tent/canopy when we first moved in last year, but I’m getting tired of the “Ikea” contemporary look (my style is definitely more traditional and luxe), so I’m planning on putting some pretty panelling and trim on them.  Once that’s done, their room will be finished and I will feel like a better mother for giving my children a rockin’ room (they’re already pretty stoked with it, admittedly LOL).

Yet another “milestone”…  GB and I were running around town on my birthday going appliance window shopping and happened upon a terrific deal.  So, now, we have a brand new stainless steel GE slide in range with glass cooktop.  The oven is quite a bit larger than our previous beast, which makes me really, really happy, and so far, though I wasn’t incredibly happy about the glass cooktop during the buying process, I’m really happy with it now.  Cleaning is really easy, which is a surprise to me.  While at Home Depot “doing that thing he does” (and does so well!), GB also got a new dishwasher to match.  The only thing that doesn’t match in our kitchen now is our microwave, but I don’t want to get a new one until we remodel the kitchen and actually have more room for it.  I call this a milestone because we’d fallen into a rut and became complacent with our current kitchen situation.  Our kitchen was clearly designed by someone who didn’t care about cooking or spending time in the kitchen.  I’ll have to post a picture…it’s horrible.  No counter space, no storage space, no MOVEMENT space…  Any change in the kitchen is a milestone.

In all of this economic crisis and scare talk from the President (which I don’t wholly believe for various reasons), we are incredibly blessed to be doing very well.  Incredibly blessed.

The Journey to Feeling at Home in Your Home

Or better known as, “Getting Your Shit Together.”

So, what’s all this I’m talking about and how does it relate to me?  Well, the house was a wreck.  Stuff everywhere.  A living room full of unfolded clean laundry gathering dust (literally - it was six months of unfolded clothes and linens - I love using my new washer and dryer, but hate folding clothes).  Important papers getting crumpled and wrinkled and lost while the UNimportant ones stood prominently about.  ”Surface dirty” turning to “deep cleaning required” status as the clutter prevented me from dusting, wiping, and vacuuming.  Ugh.  Just…ugh.  To add insult to injury?  I’m a stay at home mom with seven hours of alone time a day to get all of this taken care of.  And I don’t even grocery shop!  GB loves doing that!

This transition from being a strongly independent single mom, working an office job that I absolutely adored, to getting married, becoming a stay at home mom of “twins” in a new, drastically different town (think Alaska to Texas different)…well, it wasn’t the easiest and for a period of time I was back on anti-depressants (which I’ve never liked because while they were a necessary TOOL for me, I don’t view them as a healthy long term solution for ME).  Obviously, that was a huge change and now that I was at home, the kids were in school, and the husband at work, I knew I didn’t want to be a maid, but didn’t know how to clean and set up a new home without feeling like a maid.  And being so used to doing it all on my own, I didn’t know how to ask for help.  At least not in a way that would motivate and truly help.  Anyway, it took a while, but I figured it out.

I’d done the Fly Lady program previously, right after the prawn had been born, and it had a huge impact on me.  It had truly changed the way I had looked at cleaning.  I had a negative emotional reaction to cleaning when I first started with the program and after the first couple of days, that feeling was gone and it has never returned.  Cleaning went from a dreaded event that nearly led to tears to a game that left me feeling like I had won every time.  It’s just that, well…we get bored of the same old game after a while, right?  And winning every time, well, we start to take it for granted.  And then, when we’re talking about the cleaning game, habitual slacking leads to a landslide of catchup.

But now, at this point in my life, it’s not about cleaning.  It’s about having a “Home Sanctuary.”  It’s about creating that space for our family that we’re all proud of.  And, yes, I want my husband to think I’m a wonderful homemaker.  And I want to avoid that feeling of “not earning my keep.”  My husband laughs and rolls his eyes nervously whenever I say that and we both know that’s not the way it is, but because I take this job seriously, it’s important for me to feel like my time here is spent well and not better spent working outside the home.  Further, when the house is a wreck, it’s hard for me to feel like I have the time to devote to helping the kids with school work or art projects, which is, clearly, detrimental to their development, as well.  I already know that I can rock the job scene, but what about home?!

I had to do something to make myself happy with the home situation, as well as my family.  I was finding it hard to get motivated to go back to the “shine your sink” methodical routine of Fly Lady.  I still love her, but felt the need to graduate from “Fly Baby” status and look for a more grown up approach.  Something that would make me really proud of myself.  Developing my own plan would make me really proud of myself and lead to me wanting to keep up with my goals.  I started by opening up my computer calendar program and made a schedule that encompassed every single minute of my day.  I’ve heard that a lot of people do this, so I gave it a shot.  That didn’t work.  At all.  I like a more flexible approach.  I sat there and thought about the things that needed to be done.  I wrote them all down in my text editor.  Then, I cut and pasted everything that fell into routine “chores” (I hate that word) into one column.  Everything else, the larger tasks, stayed in the other column.  After quite a bit of thinking, I finally settled on organizing these tasks by room instead of by type.  One room at a time instead of making one big sweep through the house.  For example, every Monday, I tackle the front of the house.  The den and attached dining room, my blue room (second living room that was previously full of clean laundry), and the hallway.  And because even that can sound more daunting than it is, I broke it down into only the absolutely necessary tasks in the order they should be done.  Decluttering, dusting, vacuuming, windows, and airing out.  Those are the basics for most rooms.  I added clean the chairs to the dining room because, well, we have two five year olds and ivory microfiber dining room chair seats.  I added water plants to the blue room because they typically only need watering once a week.  So, all this on Monday, but when you break it down on paper so it looks like this (left).

It all looks a little more do-able, doesn’t it?  And because I scheduled only every other day, anything that doesn’t get done on the scheduled day, can be completed on the next day.  Also, because I really like pretty things, this had to be pretty.  If I didn’t enjoy looking at this, I knew I simply wouldn’t.  There are so many colors and fonts to choose from - one can really make a fun looking spreadsheet.  You can even add a muted background image or print it out on pretty paper.  Anyway, I’ve saved it as an Excel workbook for download below.  Check it out!  It’s a work in progress, but I have the weekly task list that you see above, as well as pantry inventory, a master to do list, and menu planning page.  Hopefully, it’ll be useful for you.  Remember, it’s a work in progress, and nowhere near finished (I’ll be tackling the pantry organization and inventory this week - eek!).  As I refine my methods, the workbook will grow.

Household Management Excel Workbook

Time and home management for stay at home moms.  Who knew it was so important?!  I end my day feeling happy and relaxed as I hop into bed, not feeling heavy, beaten down, and then not wanting to get out of bed in the morning.  I’m sleeping better (quality!) and getting up easier.  They boys are happy because I’m more likely to make a decent breakfast for them as opposed to their usual quick pour cereal.  Maybe I’ll even work up to making GB breakfast in the morning.  Ehhh…we’ll see.  Maybe if he starts getting up a little earlier.  ;)

Raw Food Chronicles

It’s been a while since I’ve written about this, but after today’s steal and new experience with mice, I thought I’d give an update.

For new readers, you may or may not know that we feed our cats “Biologically Appropriate Raw Food” aka “BARF” or “Bones and Raw Food.”  Cats are obligate carnivores, which means that their nutritional requirements comes solely from meat.  Raw meat.  No grains, no sauteed veggies, no by products, no crap…just a whole lot of what they would eat in the wild (feral, indoor-outdoor cats, etc.) and thrive on.  Whole chicken, cornish game hen, fish, mice, rats, birds, rabbit, and other small prey.  We’ve got big, healthy, beautiful cats with shiny coats and perfectly white teeth with no buildup, whatsoever.  It wasn’t always that way, either.  Adeline, our female Maine Coon rescue, has always been healthy in appearance and behavior.  Caspian, our male Maine Coon, was a bit smaller, very feral in behavior, and apparently, had a rough start to life.  They were caught together, outdoors, by the Texas Maine Coon Rescue Alliance.  The wonderful women who connected to save these little guys spent a lot of time nursing Casey back to sustainable life.  We were lucky enough to be able to bring these little guys home and, of course, I’d researched the shit out of food just prior to picking them up.  It was apparent to me from the start that, like all living creatures, these guys needed NUTRITION, not just food.  Given his rough start, I was worried about future problems like compromised immune or growth and joint problems.  Anyway, we brought them home with a bag of Royal Canin Baby Cat food and kept them on that until we were sure they weren’t stressed from the home transition anymore.  Then, because I couldn’t get my first choice, Innova’s EVO, locally (it’s a “meat only” commercial food), we went with Wellness canned and Wellness CORE kibble.  Eventually, I grew big enough balls to give raw food a try.  I’d wanted to do it for a while, but was nervous to try it, which is strange, because, like a mother breastfeeding her child, cats eating raw food is about as natural as it gets.  Somewhere between there and here, we switched entirely to raw with no canned food to supplement.  The plaque buildup on their teeth vanished thanks to the chewing of bones and texture of the raw meat.  Their intermittent, but severe, bouts of diarrhea cleared up within two days.  Their behavior, within that first meal, became more gentle and affectionate.  Not just a little - they were completely different cats.  They went from “bad, evil kitties” to loving, vocal (ha!), and openly friendly cats.  The changes were astounding.  And for the record, it’s cooking that makes chicken (and other) bones brittle and splinter.  Raw bones are an excellent source of calcium for cats and dogs.

So, what was this “new experience” I spoke of earlier?  Mice.  They’re supposed to be the perfect “whole food” for a cat.  This morning, my dilemma wasn’t what to have for breakfast…it was alive or frozen.  I thought about this the whole way to the pet store and finally decided on the frozen.  Now, I’m not a squeamish girl and can talk about most subjects while eating, but the thought of killing mice for my cats sort of…well, turned me off.  I head to the check out counter with my three bags - 3 pinkies, 3 fuzzies, and 3 small rats - praying that the check out clerk doesn’t inquire about my rodent eating pet.  Chatty as can be, she didn’t even notice what I was buying as she rambled on about cleaning her work station and the randomly functioning handheld scanner.  I breathe a sigh of relief as she bid me a lovely day and sent me on my way.  Why I’m anxious about this is why most raw foodies are anxious about it.  It’s not mainstream knowledge.  In fact, I’ve heard more than once, “Cat’s can eat that stuff?!” in reference to raw meat.  I don’t want every single encounter to turn into an educational lesson or head to head about my word and what someone’s Hill’s Science Diet promoting vet is telling them.  Us raw, organic food feeding pet owners are the freaks of nature in the eyes of those who feed corn and chicken shit to their beloved pets.  I digress.  On the way home, I reach into the bag to inspect one of the rodent containing bags.  Up to my face, I’m greeted nose to nose with a frozen white mouse.  The bag hadn’t been sealed properly.  Nostrils flare and the mouse goes back into the grocery sack.  The look on my face must have been pretty exaggerated, as it was noticeable to the older man at the stop light next to me.  I get home and open up the bag with “pinkies” written on it.  There I am, standing by the stove, pulling open the opaque zip lock baggie only to quickly zip it shut again.  A wave of tears swallowed down with a deep, nervous breath.  In all of my reading online, all of my research, I never once expected to see baby, as in newborn baby, mice, frozen in a bag.  Again, I’m not a squeamish girl, but holy hell, I can’t do babies.  Adult mice and rats?  No problem.  Babies are not what I was expecting.  Anyway…not wanting them to go to waste, I put them on a plate in the cats room.  They were very interested in them, but didn’t quite know what to do with them.  We’ll see if they disappear towards dinner time.  I won’t be buying more of them, but I can get a great deal on a bunch of mice if they decide they like those.

Cornish hens are our furballs favorite “dish.”  Usually, I just pick up some frozen ones and store them in the freezer.  It turns out that I was in the right place at the right time today and should have gone with my first instinct to grab all of the cornish game hen in the freezer compartment.  Usually, these two packs of certified organic game hens are around $10.00 a pack.  My eyes just about popped out of my head when I saw them with a $1.79 price tag.  I immediately placed two packs into my basket.  At the check out counter, they rang up as $5.99 per pack.  I notified the checker of their lower price and she sent someone to check.  I would have paid $5.99 for each pack gratefully, as well!  The bagger returned and stated that they had been misplaced (which means I probably didn’t read the price tag well enough! Ugh!), but because of that, they were going to give them to me for the listed price.  Of course, feeling like I was stealing, I asked if she was sure, but after confirming it with her manager the next checkout over, I walked out of there with $20.00 worth of cat food for under $4.00.  I kind of wish I’d picked up the rest of the case, but I would have felt really bad getting it at a price that wasn’t supposed to be that low and due to an employee’s error.  Anyway.  Cornish hens make great cat food. Their bones are soft enough even for beginner meat and bones eater.

More on raw feeding later.

Awe, what a cute little bug - NOT

All three boys are sick.  GB and the gremlins.  Thank the Lord above for my health.  Knocking on wood, of course.

Nic is doing the best out of all of them, but even he is congested and sounds hilarious.  Mucinex is his best friend.  Jake is on the ass end of a really bad ear infection.  Since this is probably due to the antibiotics he had when he had strep (long story short, every time he has antibiotics he gets an ear infection - go figure), it means a few sleepless nights for me and quite a bit of discomfort for him.  Thank God for Mucinex (again) and homeopathic ear drops (seriously…there isn’t anything better in this world).  GB is in the same shape I was in when I had strep, but he’s pulling the “I’m a MANLY MAN!” card on me and is waiting to go to the doctor until he can waltz in casually on Monday.  I’ll humor him.  For now.  HE’s on all sorts of stuff right now.  Some prescription strength ibuprofin, Mucinex cough suppressant and decongestant, Zicam nasal swabs (I don’t have quite as much faith in those as I do in the ear drops Jake’s on, BTW), Boiron oscillococcinum, hot black tea with honey and heavy cream for his sore throat (I make kick ass tea), and dark chocolate with crystallized ginger.  Did you know that dark chocolate is as good for a sore throat as codeine?  Mom?  Are you reading this?  This is your day.  LOL  I don’t have the sources for that, but we have found that to work.

With the intentions of making chicken soup tomorrow, I roasted a chicken tonight.  It was seriously yum.  Seriously.  GB wanted something with lots of rosemary, so that’s what I gave him.  We have this enormous rosemary bush out front with a lot of fresh growth on it, so I hacked a huge couple of sprigs off.  Took a quarter of that and put it in simmering butter to infuse with minced garlic, some thyme, cayenne, and black pepper (all very good for the sickly folk, BTW).  Let it cool for a minute and poured it over the chicken and Yukon Gold potatoes waiting in the dutch oven.  Salted and roasted at 450 for 20 minutes, covered and turned temp down to 325 for a little over an hour.  I do wish I’d gotten pictures.  It was gorgeous.  And really, really yummy.  I made a roasted garlic chicken gravy to go with it all and it was perfect.  Well, except for the green beans I forgot in the microwave (yes, I microwave frozen veggies when I don’t have any fresh).  They’re still there, as a matter of fact, having just now remembered them.  Wonderful, Steph.  Seriously.  Soup will be good tomorrow.

I’m off to check on the gremlins I hear creaking around in their beds and get GB some shorts.  Apparently, he can’t sleep nakie.  Drives me nuts, but he’s sick, so I’ll humor him once again.  ;)

The Best Gift

Christmas was absolutely wonderful.  Relaxing and happy and lots of fun for everyone, but most importantly, for the boys.

GB gifted me with the most amazing gift I’ve ever had.  He made a picture/memory book of our first year together.  I’m not particularly weepy when it comes to things like that (I appreciate it, but there’s never tears), but the second I unwrapped it, I was a puddle on the floor (and so was he).  Then, add to that the handgun classes, gorgeous and unique diamond circle pendant, and the iPhone he got me…I’m still a bit shell shocked.  Everything he got me had some sort of emotional attachment to it.  I love this man.  So very much.

Mom gave me this absolutely stunning, perfect, early 1900’s signed Tiffany, enamel pansy with a diamond in the center pendant.  The colors are the best I’ve ever seen - very pretty pastel shades and more refined looking than most I’ve been able to find online.  Blew me away, let me tell you!  I was not expecting anything of that caliber.

I got my mom some killer jeans.  They were Not Your Daughter’s black jeans with black swirly rhinestone embellishments on the back pockets.  She said that she loved them and they fit perfectly.  Awesome.  I got my dad the men’s Kiehl’s skin care line.  He sounded really happy to have that, which makes me happy!  For GB, I picked up the ScanGauge II for his car - he’s been wanting that for ages.  I also gave him a meat slicer since he’s so into smoking and all things meat right now (my dad gave him an awesome meat grinder and TRUE instant read thermometer).  And the boys?  Let’s just say that they had great time.  A really great time.  Especially unwrapping that ginormous telescope that Nana and Grand Dad sent them (holy moly, I may use this more than them!).

I also made it a priority to contact a few important people whom I have not been all that great about keeping in touch with (I’m horrible about keeping in touch).  Though, I wound up leaving some messages on voicemails, it was really good to talk with the others.  My new years resolution every year has been to strive for more optimism.  I’ve always been successful in that.  Maybe I’ll change that this year to keeping in touch with those who mean a lot to me.  They (and WE) deserve that.

As cliche as this may sound, the best gift of all was us all being together.  GB and the gremlins were home the whole week.  It was a dream-like holiday.
